Chapter Six

When Thorin woke and rolled over, he found Alexander staring up at the ceiling. Their gazes met, and Alexander rolled to his side. “Good morning,” Alexander said.

“A very good one indeed.” Thorin bridged the distance between them. “Did you sleep well?”

Alexander nodded. “You had me in a tight grip, though. I had to be quite inventive to get up and relieve myself without waking you.”

“Even asleep I’m unwilling to let go.”

Alexander smirked. “Seems so.” The smirk faded, and he sighed. “What did you do all day yesterday?”

“Drove everyone half mad wandering around looking for things to do to keep myself from coming back up here.”

Alexander stared at him as if he’d expected a different answer. “Oh.” He licked his lips. “Well, what were you going to do today? What duties do you have? There seem to be many people here. It must be a great responsibility.”

“We’re not so large as Murien’s realm, but we’re three thousand strong last I checked. And growing. Five babes were born while I was gone.”

“How many warriors?”

“Planning an invasion?”

“No. Wondering how safe it is here. You don’t have walls.”

“All adults are trained, though some are more skilled. We could easily assemble a force of two thousand good men and women to fight.”

“Your women fight?”

“Yes. They’re often quicker than men, and they can squeeze into places a man like me could never even hope to fit through. The women to the south are held down. If their men were killed, they’d be defenseless. That’s not chivalrous in my eyes. They’d be raped and abused by invaders. They’d be unable to defend their children.”

“Hmmm. Even I don’t know how to fight. Would you teach me? I can’t just be a pampered pet.”

Thorin smiled. “Have you decided to stay, truly?”

Alexander bit his lip, and Thorin wondered if Alexander had spoken something he’d wished to keep hidden. “I don’t wish to go home. That’s all I really know.” He cleared his throat and sat up, stretching and keeping his face turned away. “I want to go with you, whatever you do today.” He looked back then. “If that’s all right.”

Thorin sat up and pulled him close. “Of course it is. I want you at my side in all things.” He caressed Alexander’s stomach gently. “I’m not objecting, but you don’t have to be so deferential. I liked your spirit above all else.”

“I’m … getting my bearings. Don’t worry. I’ll be ordering you around soon enough.”

Thorin laughed. “Then let us dress and eat. I have so much to show you.” He kissed Alexander’s neck and moved to the wardrobe, smiling as he thought about spending the entire day with Alexander.

Athol was not in when Thorin and Alexander came to see him, but Nicolai was in the garden outside the villa. He was pruning a creeping vine on a trellis when they approached, and he smiled broadly at them both.

“Thorin. I suppose I don’t need to ask how you are.” Nicolai nodded to Alexander. “I’m Nicolai, one of Athol’s servants.
